About Jarek Miszczyk



Jarek Miszczyk is a Senior Software Engineer at the ISV Solutions Enablement organization in Rochester, MN. He has been with IBM for 15 years. His mission is to provide consulting services to ISVs, large IBM Clients, and other IBM organizations on DB2 for i5/OS related issues. He also writes extensively and teaches IBM classes in all areas of the System i database. Before joining the ISV Solutions Enablement organization in 2000, he has worked for several years at the IBM ITSO in Rochester, where he was the leading author of several popular database Redbooks. Jarek holds a Masters degree in computer science and has over 18 years of experience in the computer field. His areas of expertise include cross-platform database programming, database performance tuning, and database integration with emerging technologies (XML, Java, Microsoft .NET).


About Claus Weiss



Claus Weiss is an advisory software consultant with the Rational Software System i – Ecosystem team at the IBM Canada Toronto Laboratory. He has degrees in industrial engineering and computer science from the University of Hamburg in Germany. He worked as a systems engineer with IBM Germany and joined the IBM Toronto Laboratory in 1984. He was a developer and team leader for System/38 development tools. He was a member of the Design Control Group for the AS/400 development tools. He has worked as a consultant for System i Application Development for the past 10 years specializing in Visual Tools. Claus is a frequent speaker at COMMON and other System i conferences. He is a 6 time winner of COMMON’s Speaker Excellence award. He is the lead author of the book Understanding the IBM WebFacing Tool, published by IBM Press, and has co-authored several IBM Redbooks.

Session #1 - The ABCs of Coding High Performance SQL Apps - by Jarek Miszczyk

If you are thinking about using or have used SQL on the System i, then you need to understand how the System i database engine handles SQL requests. This session covers performance concepts that apply to any SQL interface (embedded SQL in applications, JDBC, ODBC).

In this session, youw will learn:
  • The basics of access plans, open data paths (ODPs), and reusable ODPs.
  • How these concepts directly affect performance.
  • How to code high-performing SQL on the System i.

Session #2 - DB2/UDB : SQL Stored Procedures - by Jarek Miszczyk

Stored Procedures are a valuable tool for improving performance in distributed and networked environments. In addition, they can also be used to improve the flexibility and design of your applications. SQL Stored Procedures offer a procedural language that is comparable to those of other DB Servers such as Oracle & SQL Server.

Session #4 - Introduction to Remote System Explorer - by Claus Weiss

The Remote Systems Explorer (RSE) is the development environment within WebSphere Development Studio Client that allows you to develop RPG and COBOL applications. This development tool is the 21st century follow-on to the world of SEU, SDA, PDM, etc and even CODE/ 400. All the things that a developer might wish were possible with a green screen are in the RSE and some that you haven't even thought of yet!! Other benefits include improving programmer productivity and morale, off-loading host development workload and allowing existing applications to be maintained more effectively.
